In Mr. Goble's class we were assigned the task of interviewing someone in an interesting class at my school. My partner: Cameron and I interviewed Nicole Shapiro who was in Mrs. Shaw' Photography class. I really enjoyed this process because my partner and I worked quickly and efficiently on this project. Our natural sound was a little staticy at the beginning, but besides that I thought our project was really good.
I recently completed a project in my Broadcast Technology class, where I interviewed someone for a unique experience that they had. I interviewed my dad because he ran the San Francisco Marathon this summer. This project taught me many things. It taught me not to procrastinate first of all. I started my project later than I should have because I didn't have an idea for my story. My project could have been a whole lot better if I had started it sooner. It also taught me the importance of a steady camera and angles. If you have a shaky camera it turns a good video into a bad one, it turns it unprofessional. Angles are important so the viewer doesn't get bored. If you have a five minute video with only one angle, the viewer will get very bored, very quickly. Another thing that is important in an interviewing video is b-roll. B-roll provides action. It also gives the viewer an idea of what he is looking at. Audio is also very important to a video. If your audio is inconsistent then it will sound very unprofessional. If it is too quiet you can't hear and if it is too loud then it can hurt your ears. It is very important to find that perfect sport between too loud and too quiet. My video was not the best ever, but if the next time I interview someone and use all of these key components, it will be a stellar video.
Editing, like shooting angles, is what separates a boring video from an interesting one. While editing your film, you don't want to make it to flashy, but pleasing to your eyes. You don't want it to be cheesy with bad special effects, but it should have some to cover up your mistakes. IF you edit your video well, it will look very professional.
If you shot a video with just one angle, it would be pretty boring. When you shoot a video you should get in different shots and angles so you can see someone's perspective. In the NBA they have cameras in the backboard to see players when they dunk. In the NFL they have cameras in the pylons to see if the players got their feet in bound. It also makes it a lot more interesting to look. If you get shots like medium and wide you can show the setting. If you do opposite you can really show your main character. Shooting angles is what makes your video different from other, boring videos.
Interviewing lets journalists get down to a personal level with the interviewees. It let's us see their side of the story. We can also get a real life experience of what we are interviewing them about. They let us get a personal connection to them and to the story.
In order to know the background and information for the story you are reporting on, you need to research the topic. It would be bad for you to go into a story knowing absolutely nothing about it. You would have no questions or even a base of what you would report about. Research is how you formulate your story, therefore it is a key part of journalism.
Shooting B-Roll is a way to see people without them seeing you. It is a way to observe someone or something in its natural environment. B-Roll is important for broadcasting so people can see real people doing real things. Without B-Roll you would just see actors doing what they're told to do.
Visual Storytelling is an increasingly popular way of hearing about the news. Since everyone has some sort of cellular device, an online way of hearing the news is the most convienient way. Video news is also becoming very popular from serious news like ABC and CBS to funny ones like Jon Stewart and John Oliver. Most news show distort your view of the news, they only show the things that they want you to see. News shows like Extra and People don't show newsworthy material and show stuff like the Kardashians and Jenner.
